If you have never watched Star Wars, start with A New Hope. Chronological order is neat. Release order is storytelling.
Star Wars now spans theatrical films, live-action series, animation and decades of characters. A newcomer does not need all of it. Pick a doorway, finish a story and expand only when curiosity pulls you somewhere else.
The Castle Chronicle first-watch order
- Episode IV: A New Hope
- Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
- Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
- Episode I: The Phantom Menace
- Episode II: Attack of the Clones
- Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
- Episode VII: The Force Awakens
- Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
- Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
This preserves the original trilogy’s revelations, then turns the prequels into history before moving into the sequel era.
Where Rogue One fits
Watch Rogue One after the original trilogy on a first journey. Chronologically it leads directly into A New Hope, but it lands better when you already understand what the Rebellion and Death Star mean.
When to watch Solo
Solo is a side story. Put it after the original trilogy or after the prequels when you want more Han Solo rather than treating it as required connective tissue.
The Mandalorian path
If Grogu is why you are here, you can take a much shorter route:
- A New Hope
- The Empire Strikes Back
- Return of the Jedi
- The Mandalorian Seasons 1–2
- The Book of Boba Fett — selected Mandalorian/Grogu chapters matter
- The Mandalorian Season 3
- The Mandalorian and Grogu
What about Clone Wars and Rebels?
Animation is not side material if you care about Ahsoka, Mandalore or the deeper history of the prequel era. But it is a separate commitment. Our Star Wars animation guide tells you whether to start with The Clone Wars, Rebels or The Bad Batch.
Chronological order
Chronological viewing becomes fun on a rewatch because it lets political and character arcs unfold in-universe. It is not our recommendation for a first watch because it changes the intended reveal structure of the original films.
