The most interesting thing about the new Avengers: Doomsday footage is not another giant cast reveal. It is Marvel finally showing what kind of problem could require all of those characters in the same movie.
Marvel has spent years making the multiverse bigger. Avengers: Doomsday now appears ready to make that expansion hurt.
Footage attached to Avengers: Endgame — Encore showed the Time Variance Authority watching concurrent incursions tear through timelines, Doctor Doom collecting Bruce Banner for reasons Marvel is keeping deliberately murky, and Loki re-entering a story that the Russo brothers say grows directly out of the ending of Endgame.
The TVA footage gives the crossover an actual reason to exist
Marvel’s cast list is enormous: Avengers, Fantastic Four, Wakandans, Thunderbolts, X-Men and characters from several corners of the MCU are converging. A roster that large can be exciting, but it can also become a parade of entrances if the story has no pressure holding it together.
The TVA sequence is the first detail that makes the scale feel dramatically necessary. Joe Russo described thousands of universes collapsing in seconds and framed it as an “end of times” event for an organization whose job is literally to keep timelines from falling apart. That turns the multiverse from a cameo delivery system into the disaster itself.
Doom and Banner is the scene we want to understand
Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom collecting Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner is exactly the kind of image Marvel knows will generate theories. The better question is not simply why Doom wants Hulk. It is what Doom understands about the collapsing multiverse that the heroes do not.
Doom works best when he believes his control is not merely justified but necessary. If Doomsday leans into that arrogance — the idea that only Doom can impose order on something everyone else has allowed to fracture — Marvel has a villain who can carry philosophical weight as well as spectacle.
The Russos are deliberately reopening Endgame
Anthony Russo said the filmmakers originally treated Endgame as an ending, not a launchpad. Years later, the road to Doomsday convinced them the next story needed to pick up from that ending. That is an important creative signal. Marvel is not pretending the emotional closure of Steve Rogers, Tony Stark and the Infinity Saga never happened; it is asking what happens when later events destabilize the world that closure left behind.
Loki’s presence is especially important after his Disney+ story transformed him from a recurring antagonist into a character literally tied to the survival of timelines. If the TVA is watching reality collapse, Loki cannot plausibly be just another cameo.
And Marvel says the cast still is not complete
Mark Ruffalo was not part of Marvel’s viral cast announcement, and Anthony Russo has now confirmed that the studio has not announced everyone. That keeps speculation alive, but we would rather judge Doomsday by how it uses the characters already confirmed than by treating every unannounced actor as a scavenger hunt.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled for December 18, 2026. If you are trying to catch up without watching the entire MCU, start with our Marvel watch-order guide and use the Movie Finder to build a focused rewatch.
