Where to Start with Star Wars Animation: Clone Wars, Rebels or Bad Batch?

Find a manageable entry into Star Wars animation, understand the difference between release and episode chronology, and choose a series without a giant homework list.

Star WarsWhere to Start with Star Wars Animation: Clone Wars, Rebels or Bad Batch?CASTLE CHRONICLE

Star Wars animation is not one giant prerequisite. Start with the era or character you care about, then let the shows connect themselves.

Start with The Clone Wars if you want the biggest foundation

The Clone Wars sits between Episodes II and III and dramatically expands Anakin, Obi-Wan, the clones and the Republic’s fall. It also introduces Ahsoka Tano, whose story now reaches live action.

The series is long and its release order is not perfectly chronological. First-time viewers can use the official chronological episode order if they want a smoother timeline, but release order remains completely viable.

Start with Rebels if you want a tighter commitment

Star Wars Rebels follows a smaller found-family crew in the years before A New Hope. It begins accessibly, grows into Jedi and Rebellion mythology and becomes increasingly important to Ahsoka-era live action.

If the number of Clone Wars episodes is stopping you from watching anything, start here. You can understand the Ghost crew without completing seven seasons first.

Start with The Bad Batch if the clones are your interest

The Bad Batch begins around the fall of the Republic and rise of the Empire. It works best with some Clone Wars familiarity because its central characters and emotional context grow directly from that series.

Our practical order

  1. The Clone Wars — if you are willing to make the larger commitment.
  2. Rebels
  3. The Bad Batch — either after Clone Wars or after Rebels depending on whether chronology matters to you.
  4. Tales anthology stories where relevant to characters you already know.
If you only want Ahsoka: prioritize key Clone Wars arcs, then Rebels. Do not watch hundreds of episodes merely because a completionist told you it is required.

Where animation sits with the films

Use our Star Wars starting guide for the movie path. Animation becomes most rewarding once you understand the broad eras: Republic, Empire and post-Return of the Jedi.
